2012 seems to have got away to a record start, with our Account Managers reporting a huge increase in telephone enquiries, resulting in an equally-huge number of new pupils and new ADI Joiners. More and more of our Instructors are also reporting full diaries, which has to be a happy change of events, given the decline in driving lessons on the run up to Christmas.
Don’t forget, Surepass has more to offer the prospective pupil than just the hourly pre-paid lesson – we also have a range of intensive courses. Why not give our Booking Line a call?

Special Bulletin – Changes to the Driving Test

From the 4th October learner drivers will be tested on independent driving as part of the practical driving test. During the test the pupil will be asked to drive for approximately 10 minutes either following a series of directions or by following traffic signs, or a combination of both. If required, the examiner may show the pupil a simple diagram of the intended route to follow. Here’s an example of a diagram similar to the one the examiner will use: Independent driving diagram

Also from October a pupil will only be asked to carry out one reversing manouevre on the driving test. The manoeuvre will be chosen by the examiner from:

Turn in the road
Left or right reverse
Reverse into a bay or parallel park

Note: The emergency stop exercise will still be conducted in 1 out of every 3 tests.

There are no plans to increase the cost of the driving test in view of the changes.

If the pupil takes a wrong turn or goes off route in error then the examiner will give directions to get the pupil back on the route. In this situation the examiner will only mark driving errors, if any occurred – just as they do now. The examiner will not mark coming off the route as a driver error and it will not count towards a pass or fail. Wherever possible the examiner will step in to assist the pupil if it looks like the pupil is about to make an error and go off the route.

Testing a pupils ability to drive independently doesn’t require the pupil to have geographic knowledge (or even speak English). If the pupil forgets the directions given then the examiner will step in and be happy to confirm them. The purpose of independent driving is to enable the pupil to make decisions without supervision - just as the pupil will do after passing the driving test and driving independently with friends.

What a week!! Amreen Bativala, Nicola Taylor and Sarah Bagnall passed their Part 3 Examination, with Sarah and Nicola acheiving success at the first attempt! To say we are proud of the girls would be an understatement and all at surepass wish them even greater success in their future careers.

I couldn’t have asked for a better Instructor than Sara! She is friendly, patient and most of all- a great teacher! i enjoyed the whole process-from start to finish,and the fact that i passed first time with very few faults is surely a testament to Sara’s skills as an Instructor!

I had my first driving lesson with Sha and felt at ease straight away. I had already been driving with another instructor but unhappy with the results! After phoning Surepass and meeting Sha I am so glad I did.Starting from the basic to turns on the road etc I have learnt more in a few lessons than I did having previous 29hr lessons with instructor from the other school.Sha explains things “simple” but mostly is reassuring and makes you feel confident and motivated

I am really pleased I chose Surepass for my Crash Course. The Customer Service Lady (Jennifer) who set it up was brilliant and very helpful also. I couldn’t of asked for a better instructor. Matthew was patient,and it was a pleasure driving with him and I hope to keep in touch.I would suggest Surepass and Matthew James to anybody who is unsure on who to start lessons with- it has been an excellent experience for me and now I have my Licence. Thanks

Disaster for BSM pupils?

Latest reports from The Driving Instructor magazine indicate that so far no other car manufacturer has stepped forward to take up the fleet contract following Vauxhalls talks with BSM. The reluctance of Vauxhall to continue supplying cars to BSM could cost the Driving School millions of pounds. Let’s hope the costs of any renegotiation are not passed on to the BSM pupils who’s lesson fees are already amongst the highest UK wide.

The report goes on to say that Vauxhall has decided it can no longer supply BSM with Corsas and Astras under its current terms. This decision could be financially disastrous and threaten plans to sell the Driving School by it’s parent company Aviva. Whilst the report also points out that Aviva has never confirmed the sale of BSM it has nevertheless solicited a number of bids for the business.

Losing a popular training car

The Vauxhall Corsa has been awarded the Driving School Car of the Year. Vauxhalls arrangements with BSM to promote the brand name through its supply of cars to the Driving School in an attempt to attract young drivers will clearly fail if negotiations come to a stand still. The result is unthinkable.
